U.S. Capitol Building, Lawn Area 9 – East of the Capitol on the Senate side
When:
Monday, September 23, 2:00pm EDT
Why:
As the Senate begins debate on funding for the Department of Homeland Security, and days before the World Day of Migrants and Refugees, Senator Tim Kaine and interfaith leaders come together to present a letter signed by over 1,000 Catholic Sisters and 4,500 interfaith advocates demanding that Congress reduce funding for deportation, detention, and border militarization. The letter will be delivered to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Senator Richard Shelby, Senator Shelley Moore Capito, and Senator Marco Rubio.
Speakers will call on Congress to cut funding to the agencies deporting people and destroying families. As justice-seekers motivated by our faith, we honor the dignity of every person. This is not a matter of partisan politics; it is a matter of people suffering. All share a fundamental human right to seek asylum. Speakers will also take questions from journalists.
