NETWORK Lobby Releases Annual Catholic Social Justice Scorecard for 117th Congress
Mary J. Novak: “Congress’s inability to pass bills into law that dismantle systemic racism and move us towards a truly representative, multi-racial democracy is a denial of justice for those who are most marginalized by our systems and structures.”
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, NETWORK Lobby for Catholic Social Justice announced the release of its 2021 Catholic Social Justice Voting Record. This annual scorecard reflects how often Members of Congress voted in accordance with the principles of Catholic Social Justice.
In 2021, people and families in the United States experienced attacks on our democracy, workplace injustices as the COVID-19 pandemic continued, systemic racism, and more. Members of Congress had a moral responsibility to legislate with the best interests of our people at heart and prioritize dismantling white supremacy, eliminating the racial wealth and income gap, and protecting our democracy. Each Senator and Representative’s score in NETWORK’s 2021 Congressional Voting Record is a reflection of their commitment to the common good.
“Over 50 years of political ministry, NETWORK has been a constant presence in Washington, calling our elected officials to put people and the common good first,” said Mary J. Novak, Executive Director of NETWORK Lobby for Catholic Social Justice. She continued, “In 2021, we saw attacks on the very foundation of our democracy and the repeated use of Congressional procedure to prevent debate on critically needed legislation. Congress’s inability to pass bills into law that dismantle systemic racism and move us towards a truly representative, multi-racial democracy is a denial of justice for those who are most marginalized by our systems and structures.”
NETWORK Lobby scored Congress on ten votes in 2021, one in the Senate and nine in the House of Representatives. NETWORK recommended ten ‘Yes’ votes on bills that protect workers’ rights and voting rights, provide COVID-19 relief, create a pathway to citizenship for our undocumented siblings, and remove racist sentencing disparities in the criminal-legal system, as well as the transformational Build Back Better Act. Unfortunately, most of these bills never advanced beyond the House due to the willingness of Republican Senators to utilize the racist, Jim Crow-era filibuster to block needed legislation.
State delegations that received 100% on NETWORK’s voting record scorecard are: Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont.
The Catholic Social Justice Voting Record and each Member’s score is online at: www.networklobby.org/votingrecord2021.
