WASHINGTON, D.C. –In advance of Representative Tom Price’s confirmation hearing for Secretary of Health & Human Services, Sister Simone Campbell, SSS, Executive Director of NETWORK Lobby for Catholic Social Justice and leader of Nuns on the Bus issued the following statement:
“Representative Price has been lauded as a pro-life leader, but I am dismayed that his record of attacking the Affordable Care Act demonstrates that he is anything but. As a Catholic Sister, I know that support of the ACA means support of programs that help provide life-saving coverage to millions of Americans. Instead, Rep. Price’s tenure in Congress has been spent playing partisan political games with people’s health, rather than focusing on real attempts to improve health coverage for all. I am concerned that as HHS Secretary, Rep. Price is going to continue to pursue a political agenda that will harm millions of Americans.
“NETWORK has just finished tabulating our 2016 voting record, and Representative Price received a failing score of 10%. His record is clear: Representative Price does not support policies that will mend the gap in access to healthcare for the nearly 30 million people who are still uninsured. I join with the 30 million people who could lose coverage as a result of the repeal of the Affordable Care Act in expressing severe distrust of Representative Price’s ability to lead HHS.”
Representative Price received the following scores on NETWORK Lobby’s annual voting record, which evaluates members of Congress on policies that will help mend the gaps in inequality and promote the common good: 27% in 2015, a 20% in 2014, and 0% in 2010—the year of the passage of the Affordable Care Act.
