WASHINGTON, D.C. –In response to Senator Mike Enzi (R-WY), Chairman of the Senate Budget Committee, introducing a resolution that will enable the defunding of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), Sister Simone Campbell, SSS, Executive Director of NETWORK Lobby for Catholic Social Justice and leader of Nuns on the Bus issued the following statement:
“Senator Enzi’s budget resolution is nothing more than a political posturing document and does nothing to further good government. In fact, it undermines the constitutional mandate to work for the ‘general welfare.’
“What this resolution and coming actions of the Senate Budget Committee will do is scare 20 million people who receive healthcare because of the ACA and countless others who have benefited because of the ACA. Young adults up to the age of 26, people with pre-existing conditions, those with chronic conditions and countless others will be terrorized by this resolution. It offers nothing but fear, without presenting a substitute proposal.
“Catholic Sisters have been working on healthcare for decades, and we know that affordable healthcare for all is a basic human right and core teaching in Christianity. NETWORK calls on Congress to responsibly improve the ACA and not play politics with people’s lives.”
