WASHINGTON, D.C. –In response to the third and final presidential debate, Sister Simone Campbell, SSS, Executive Director of NETWORK Lobby for Catholic Social Justice and leader of Nuns on the Bus said, “Donald Trump’s reckless admission that he may not accept the results of our election is dangerous for our democracy and our world. NETWORK is committed to mending the gaps in access to democracy; Donald Trump is continuing to spread hate and fear that are ripping our society apart and attacking the foundation of our democracy.”

Access to democracy is one of the tremendous gaps facing our nation today, but there is a stark difference between Secretary Clinton’s and Mr. Trump’s stance on how they would work to mend this critical gap. NETWORK’s Candidate Side by Side explores their positions. Sister Simone explained, “It is clear that while Secretary Clinton is concerned with restoring the Voting Rights Act and ending the disenfranchisement of young people and people of color, Mr. Trump’s position has always been focused on fraud as a scapegoat for his possible election loss.”

Sister Simone concluded, “Catholic Social Justice calls for all Catholics to participate in a democratic society by voting. Pope Francis has said, ‘Good Catholics immerse themselves in politics by offering the best of themselves so that the leader can govern.’ This election season, voters who follow Pope Francis have made it clear that they will not be swayed by the single-issue dog whistle of the past, and instead are looking for a candidate with clearly articulated positions on tax justice, living wages, family-friendly workplaces, democracy, healthcare, citizenship, and housing. For Mr. Trump to claim that the election is rigged before most ballots have even been cast demonstrates self-interest, not commitment to our democracy and the common good. Pope Francis voters care most about healing our society, not tearing it further apart. We will not be fooled by divisive rhetoric. We the People are better than this.”
