Catholic Lobby Urges “Yes” Vote on Respect for Marriage Act
Mary J. Novak: “My Catholic faith calls all people to be treated with dignity, equality, and respect.”
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Last month, the House of Representatives passed the Respect for Marriage Act in a 267-157 bipartisan vote. NETWORK Lobby for Catholic Social Justice urges all Senators to vote “Yes” and pass this legislation as soon as possible.
The Respect for Marriage Act would repeal the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act and codify the right to civil marriage, regardless of sexual orientation or race. Inspired by the belief in the human dignity of all of God’s people and the importance of family, NETWORK advocates are proud to support this legislation.
Joan F. Neal, Deputy Executive Director & Chief Equity Officer of NETWORK Lobby for Catholic Social Justice, said:
“The federal benefits and protections available to legally married couples promote stability for families, safety and health for individuals, and advance the common good. Discrimination on any basis has no place in our country. I urge the Senate to pass this legislation to ensure everyone can live with dignity, free from discrimination.”
Mary J. Novak, Executive Director of NETWORK Lobby for Catholic Social Justice, said:
“My Catholic faith calls all people, and all families, to be treated with dignity, equality, and respect. All families regardless of race or sexual orientation deserve equal social benefits. I urge all Senators to vote yes on the Respect for Marriage Act to prevent discrimination and ensure fair and equal treatment in federal law.”
