Media Alert: Thousands Mobilize for National Day of Action Against Wage Theft

For Immediate Release: November 17, 2010

Who: NETWORK joins a coalition of dozens of national, state and local organizations, coordinated by Interfaith Worker Justice, to announce a National Day of Action Against Wage Theft.

What: A National Day of Action will bring attention to the crisis of wage theft in America.  Wage theft is the illegal underpayment or non-payment of workers’ wages and is undermining individuals’ rights to receive the wages that are due to them and undercutting their ability to support themselves and their families.

When: NOVEMBER 18, 2010

Where: Action will be taking place in cities all across America. Workers and faith leaders will participate in actions in Bangor, Maine; Chicago; Denver; Detroit; Fayetteville, Arkansas; Grand Rapids, Michigan; Houston; Madison, Wisconsin; Memphis; Miami; Minneapolis; New Brunswick, New Jersey; San Francisco; Santa Fe, New Mexico; Seattle; Syracuse, New York; and other cities. Click here to learn more and find a Wage Theft Day of Action event in your area.

Details: Organizers, advocates and labor unions will be taking action on Capitol Hill, contacting their congressional representatives, hosting workshops with workers and employers, and highlighting the need for national anti-wage theft legislation. In accordance with our support for the National Day of Action against Wage Theft. NETWORK supports H.R. 6268, The Wage Theft Prevention and Community Partnership Act. Introduced by Rep. Phil Hare on September 29, this legislation would authorize the U.S. Department of Labor to establish a competitive grant program to prevent wage theft, allowing organizations to educate workers about their rights while educating employers about their responsibilities to their employees under the law.

At this time of Thanksgiving, many of us are richly blessed. At the same time, many workers – particularly those in low-wage jobs – suffer from the injustice of their wages being taken right from their hands.
